Long a popular winter cross-training option for cyclists and triathletes, cross country skiing is a great way to get a full body workout without high impact stress. Skiing can improve your balance and agility, and provide a cardiovascular workout that is similar to swim training. And, it's perfect for Minnesota's long winters: rather than the same old routine on the trainer or treadmill, the snow becomes something to look forward to.
To get you started on this powerful training alternative, OptumHealth Performance now offers Cross Country Skiing Fundamentals. Intended for those with limited to no cross country ski experience, the course is lead by professional racer Audrey Weber who will share tips straight from her own training and racing experience on the National Circuit. It will cover cross country ski basics such as body position and fundamental biomechanics. Athletes will improve their balance and agility, as well as work on their base strength and conditioning in order to be prepared to step onto skis when the snow flies.
Cross Country Skiing Fundamentals begins Monday, October 10. The course is split into two sections: the first six weeks of classes are "dry land" training, followed by eight weeks starting in December on the snow. Although each class stands on its own, we recommend taking the series.
